The decor and atmosphere at the Hibachi Grill Buffet & Bar is top notch. From the beautifully decorated walls to the unstated elegance of the lighting to the every present and helpful, yet unobtrusive waitstaff I was well satisfied that this was destined to be a stand-out dining experience. What I received, while not at all bad, I didn't sample a single item that was bland and tasteless or poorly composed, it just did not live up to the hype created by the decor. This is your basic one price all you can eat buffet where you can choose whatever you like, serve yourself, and return as many times as you like. My friends who are local raved about it and couldn't wait to bring me here. There is a selection of items running the gamut from Chinese to American and everything I tasted was good. I went back for seconds on some of the items, as did my hosts. It was a very pleasant dinner and was fairly inexpensive. I'd definitely come back, but I'm not yet ga-ga over the place the way my friends are. Good solid food, and they keep the buffet well stocked. Reasonable prices. Excellent upscale feel. I'd say 3 1/2 stars.

Not good food you can do much better on riverside. Food was like eating microwaved out of the box. Would really recommend going somewhere else.

OK, This place USE to be really good and the food was very fresh, NOT anymore!. Last couple times I have been in there was for "To Go Orders". First of all don't advertise yourself a s a"Buffet" and than tell me Sushi is extra??? apparently the owner felt like people were taking advantage of him on the Sushi so now its apparently limited at dinner or per PC on to go orders. That's not all you can eat buffet!. Seriously, charge what you need to charge to make a profit and quit bugging me with all these special buffet rules, Stupid! Food was NOT fresh and some items(sea food pie my favorite) were down to pan scrapings. I asked them to refill and waited 10 minutes and nothing came out, this was at 7:30pm, I moved on. Obviously the owners are consumed in an apparent attempt to recover there losses and stretch there product supplies because of bad management choices and NOT understanding how to make a profit. $12.00 for 1 small Styrofoam tray of stale not fresh Chinese? I'm done and won't return.

Good service. Keep buffet well stocked. The food is better than average. Not very busy but plenty of seating almost anytime.

I did not have high expectations which is good - because the food was only passable. I also had GI issues like other Yelpers. The place was clean however.

I have to agree with a couple other reviews that this place used to be better than it is now.The service is always good but the food has become kind of hit or miss.I think if you get there for the lunch or supper rush you will be fine. They seem to keep the food much fresher during this time. The last time we went we were a little early for the supper crowd and it seemed like the food had been sitting for awhile like since lunch time awhile.Just didnt taste as good as it usually does.We will be back but our visits will only be during peak eating times from now on

We were all very pleased with our experience here. The food was good and very tasty. Good amount of tasty sushi choices (certainly not sushi restaurant quality such as Shogun or JMK Nippon, but tasty nonetheless), good price for lunch and, surprisingly, friendly staff! We are so used to, at Chinese buffets, having our drinks refilled and plates taken by staff who barely mutters a "mm hmm" or even looks at us when we say "thank you" that we were pleasantly surprised by a genuine smile and an audible "you're welcome" every time we thanked them for clearing dishes and filling drinks, which they did very well keeping up on (also another surprising deviance from our usual experience at Chinese buffets). All in all, very happy we went--this our new favorite Chinese buffet, somewhere we will certainly be frequenting more often :)

I almost gave this place two stars for the decor. The atmosphere is chill and the high ceiling with the interesting decorative touches make this a nice place to sit and chat awhile. The wine counter up front and the bar might make this a worthwhile experience if you're seeking a unique place to have a few drinks. The food, however, I've come to think of as Hong Kong Buffet lite - and it's a darn shame HK Buffet is gone now. I could hardly find enough to whet my palate here, and after the first time trying the hibachi grill tonight I was definitely not impressed. The stir fry line at Old Country Bufffet is much tastier than the soggy fatty lump of steak and noodles I received on my plate. We went here for the 2nd time tonight and I can see how I've pretty much forgotten the experience the first time. Plus, everything came exploding out the other end as soon as I got home. Sorry for the TMI, but I just can't trust this place anymore after that. Subpar food plus there was no sushi out when we were there. Nothing worth making a special trip for, at all.

We have been to Hibachi for the lunch buffet, and I have to say that this is the best around here. You can't beat $7.50 for this buffet. The flavors are spectacular and the variety of dishes will blow your mind. They have three full hot buffet tables, a two table long cold table, fresh sushi, and a dessert bar including ice cream varieties that you scoop yourself either into a dish or a cone. The décor is wonderful, and the customer service was on top of things. We will be back again and again!

Review based on lunch buffet. First and formost the cost is $7.95, keep your expectations in check. The decor is, well, none, been there 4 times and I'm not sure there is "decor". The ladies that wait the tables are fabulous, fun and always smiling. The food is fair, I go for the sushi and eat my fill. It's not over the top, if you're looking for specialty rolls this isn't the place to visit. I nibble on other items, equally fair. Again for the price and I leave happy, I'll continue to visit and enjoy

I didn't walk into the building with a lot of expectations because it's a chinese buffet, but I would loved to be wowed one of these days. Sadly the only wow's from me were how bad everything was in this place... Background: Went in hungry at noon in hopes to catch the lunch rush when the business keeps food coming in fresh. Since the bad outweighs the good I will start with the good things I remember from the place. The decor is awesome, they only put small portions out, which in turn should mean better buffet food and lastly it didn't smell bad. The bad... Well I decided to take the food critic approach and try as much as I could in small portions waiting for them to bring out fresh food and grabbing them at there peak. Sweet & Sour chicken - too much breading and flavorless by itself and the sauce has way too much of the "from the bottle" taste. Did you know it's cheaper to make it and tastes way better!!! Teriyaki Chicken skewers - these were decent and tolerable but nothing exciting. Crab Rangoon - Umm... cream cheese and sugar plus a hint of something crab-like. Pot stickers - Cooked on the outside to perfection but these frozen dumplings were wet and nearly tasteless on the inside. I couldn't help but cringe at the awful texture. Sesame chicken - Orange chicken sauce but substitute the orange peel with sesame seeds? They were cooked well but the sauce over powered the chicken 110% and left nothing but moist somewhat crunchy nuggets to chew on. Orange chicken - Same as above but flavored with orange peel! Vegetable low-mein - Actually not bad. A little too salty for me but a highlight of the day. A1 steak - Yup... steak cooked with A1 sauce. Not sure how this became chinese cuisine but the owners of this establishment must have a cookbook I haven't read yet. Oh, it wasn't very good as the steak was blah. Sushi - yup it looked like sushi but sadly it was more like mush covered in rice. Didn't try any of the fish fare but it was great seeing the brightly food dye colored salmon that most likely isn't sushi grade fish... I tried more but sadly it's forgotten and I was going to write this down but I just didn't feel the need to remember this experience. I'll go back in about month and see if my experience changes, but I'm guessing it won't. Sadly like most places in town that serve buffet style food the patrons tend to be people who like to spend little and not care that the food quality is lacking the most important part which is quality.

What a nice addition to the area. Checked in here for lunch and immediately was pleasantly surprised with the decor and customer service. The buffet is clean, with fresh food. It seems like they put small portions out not to waste it but to keep if fresh. I did notice they quickly refilled the items that were empty or getting close to empty. The sushi was the big hit. Lots of variety and was very good. It was a big hit with our group and like I said before a great addition to the area!

My wife and I dine at the Hibachi Grill Buffet at least once every two weeks. I usualy find little to complain about. The food and waiter service is very good, and we come away stuffed. However the best way to loose customers is not to pay attention to the little details. I have several complaints this time around. (1) They were missing the usual oriental dry noodles that goes with the soups. It's like missing crackers with your soup. I told the waitress about the missing part of the entree, but nothing was done. (2) The Green Pepper stake dish was cold. Except for the hot soup, everything else I had was lukewarm. (3) They had been serving small Rock Crabs at the salad bar. There were two very sad looking pieces left in the serving bowl. It was never refilled. If anything it should have been removed, if they were going to stop serving that item. (4) Billing. I ordered a $5 glass of Plum Wine from their table menu chart and even pointed out the wine I wanted to the waitress. The wine was good. However when she brought the bill at the end of the meal, she explained in broken English, that they had been out of the $5 wine and brought me a $7 wine instead. We were never told about the switch at the beginning of the meal. We were charged the extra $2. It sure would have been nice if she had come back after I placed the intitial order and told us they were out of the $5 wine and asked us if we wanted the $7 wine. I didn't make an issue of it, but probably should have asked for an adjustment to the bill.. Again little things mean a lot.

Great Selection and friendly staff. Most Items are fantastic and sushi is typically very good. I dream about their coconut shrimp however... if you haven't been here you should go. It's Definitely the best buffet in the Rockford area.

Like the previous reviewer, I walked in with low expectations because it's a Chinese buffet. I had even lower expectations for the sushi. I was pleasantly surprised on both accounts. We went in for the $10.99 dinner buffet, and the people were pouring in with us. The place was spotless, we were seated instantly (you can even make reservations!), and our server was very on top of things, especially for a buffet. We had drinks on our table almost immediately. I did see that they had pretty good drink specials, plus what looked like a full bar. I'm pretty leery when it comes to food covered in sauce at these places - one piece of gristle and I'm out of there. I was happy to find that the sesame chicken, orange chicken, and honey chicken were all tasty little crunchy bits of gristle-less chicken covered in different sauces. The spring rolls were tasty (and I'm picky!), the sugar-coated donuts (not sure what those are technically called) were so good that my husband had four. I absolutely loved their little crab rangoons. They were fresh, tasty, and didn't have too much onion in them. Yum. The only thing I didn't care for was their sweet and sour sauce. Just too sweet...not enough tang. I also tried the chicken skewers (smelled delicious, pretty good!) and the pot stickers (these were pan fried until they're a little bit browned and crispy...also really good). The sushi was pretty good for an all-you-can-eat buffet. They had the standard California and Philly rolls, plus a lot of fancy creations with eel sauce and masago. The sushi chef was certainly working hard while we were there. There were a few rolls that I didn't care for, but that was mostly because of the combinations I picked. They also had various tempura sushi (battered and deep fried pieces) that were really fresh and tasty. They did have some weird dishes that I didn't try....things like "Cheese Mussels," hot fruit pie, and various slabs of fish in buttery oil. I didn't have any, but they had the standard scoop your own ice cream and weird cake selections. The only thing missing was the Chinese buffet dinner crab legs that I see at so many places (which would probably up the price). I'm fine with not having them because of the price of the buffet, plus there were so many other good choices. We got fortune cookies at the end of our meal. We had a great time... with great service and great food. I'm happy to finally have some decent Chinese food in the Rockford area!

My dad and I just tried this place for the first time and I am definitely impressed. The sushi bar is the highlight, of course. They have a bigger selection of sushi than the other asian buffets, and while it's not incredible, it's as good as you can expect to find at a buffet. I particularly liked the philadelphia roll, the tempura rolls, and anything with avocado in it. Though what made it even better for me is that they had seaweed salad! I love seaweed salad! That by itself is a good enough reason for me to come here. Other than that, they had your usual selection of egg rolls, crab rangoon, and other fried dishes (the fried shrimp were so juicy and crunchy and delicious), the potstickers were kinda soggy and limp but still tasty, and though I was too full for more than a few bites of them, they had a nice selection of stir fry dishes like sesame chicken, honey chicken, general tso's, happy family, chow mein, etc. Oh, and the coconut shrimp were yummy too. And I love how they put smaller dishes out so that they are refreshed more often and don't get old. They also had a good selection of cold items, and desserts, though the fruit particularly stood out. The cantaloupe was perfect, and they had longans/lychees! Love those too! The restaurant was nicely decorated with a more modern theme, and not just a bunch of asian things thrown up everywhere like the other places. And last but not least, our waitress Claire was everything you could ask for. She was very friendly and spent quite a while talking to us, and trying to teach us a bit of chinese. Can't wait to go there again! :)

I've been trying to find a good, high quality Chinese restaurant, and now I've found it! The thing that sets sets Hibachi above and beyond the other buffets is the presentation and quality of the food. They don't put a whole lot of food out and just let it sit there and get old, they put a modest amount of good fresh food out. They have a nice selection of different foods including all the usual dishes with a few surprises. Hibachi is billed as Chinese, Japanese and American, so, I don't know why a reviewer before me was so shocked to see some American dishes there. He also said he couldn't tell the difference in the Orange chicken sauce and the sesame chicken sauce. Sesame chicken is by far my favorite Chinese dish, and , I can assure you the sauces are nothing alike. In fact, their sesame chicken is quite spicy and the orange is NOT. They also have a great hibachi grill where you pick out whatever it is that you want and they cook it right there before your eyes. You can't get any fresher than that. This is definitely the best tasting and highest quality buffet in the Rockford area. Highly recommended! I will say that when the restaurant gets at least half full, the acoustics in there make it sound like it's full, so, be prepared for a little noise.
